International Solid Waste Association to discuss sustainable consumption at 2018 congress

Sustainable consumption as a solution to waste minimisation will be the centre of focus at the 28th edition of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) World Congress 2018, to be held from October 22-24 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Ho De Leong, chairman of the Waste Management Association of Malaysia (WMAM), one of two joint organisers of the congress, told TTGmice e-Weekly that the congress theme, Sustainable Consumption towards Waste Minimisation, addresses the current rate of rapid consumption and waste.

Ho said: “It will look at the implementation of integrated systems to reduce waste generation and the role of effective project management in tackling this global crisis.”

“What we would like to achieve from ISWA 2018 is to educate the community, the practitioners, governments and consumers on sustainable consumption. To go back to the basics in respecting our natural resources through education and awareness and how to utilise our natural resources in a responsible manner. Through sustainable consumption, wastage could be minimised thus reduce cost and build a stronger economy to the community,” he added.

Congress sessions will offer an opportunity for Malaysian delegates to share the pitfalls, challenges and successes faced with the implementation of the National Strategic Plan for Solid Waste Management. Topics will highlight geographically pertinent issues such marine and coastal waste management in South-east Asia, disaster management, emerging technologies, conversion of waste-to-energy, e-waste and policy.

The congress, organised by both WMAM and ISWA with the support of the Malaysian Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia and the Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau, is expected to attract more than 1,000 delegates from around the world.
