Behind the imposing, Brutalist concrete that defines Zurich’s Oerlikon district lies a surprising secret. While its exterior honours the neighbourhood’s industrial roots, stepping inside Mama Shelter reveals a vibrant, neon-soaked world that is a far cry from its rigid shell
The rural community of Batang Ai in Sarawak is the beneficiary of Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak)’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project entitled Gift of Love: Batang Ai Community Library.
Built on the grounds of Nanga Ukom longhouse, the project was undertaken in conjunction with the 59th ICCA Congress Asia Pacific event from November 1-3, where the regional hub was in Sarawak’s state capital, Kuching.
A majority of children at Nanga Ukom do not complete their secondary education, thus this CSR project will also measure how effective the library will be at encouraging children to remain in school.
BESarawak’s acting CEO, Amelia Roziman, shared that they are also collaborating with local education authorities to turn the library into a pre-school and a learning centre. To further push the educational capacity, BESarawak is also in the midst of collaborating with DMCs to develop a unique CSR project – such as teaching basic English – for business visitors.
The library is currently at 90 per cent completion, with add-ons to come, such as the installation of solar panels to supply Nanga Ukom longhouse with sufficient electricity. The opening ceremony will be held on November 27.
