The resort’s infrastructure features a 416m2 Grand Ballroom, multiple dedicated breakout rooms, and over 1,000m2 of beachfront event space. Collective vision

Collaboration among CVBs used to be rare. How do you see CVB partnerships evolving today?
It is evolving substantially. Ten years ago, convention bureaus were anchored in tourism, working mainly with venues, hotels, and suppliers. But the business events landscape has changed, and our clients’ needs have become more complex, so we have had to broaden our partnerships significantly.

Now, it is about creating a strong ecosystem within our destinations, connecting not just with the tourism sector, but also with government departments like economic development, energy, and the environment.

For example, we recently worked closely with the Department of Energy and Environment in Victoria to align event strategy with the state’s renewable energy agenda.

Melbourne is a member of BestCities Global Alliance. How does working with global partner cities help shape the industry?
BestCities has been a powerful platform, where we’ve been a partner for over 25 years now! As the current chair, it is exciting to see how essential knowledge sharing has become. Among partner cities, we share what is working, whether it is sustainability strategies, community engagement, or new innovations. If something succeeds in one city, chances are it will work in another, so we approach it with a mindset of ‘a rising tide lifts all boats’.

One programme we are really proud of is the Incredible Impacts initiative, where we partner with ICCA, which recognises and supports positive impact through business events worldwide. It is open to all destinations (not just BestCities members) to apply for seed grants, and it gives a global platform to innovative, impactful work that benefits our whole industry.

How do you ensure international meetings leave a lasting legacy for both Melbourne and your partner destinations?
For us, it is about being deliberate and strategic. We look at the sectors where Melbourne has global strengths, like medical research or immunology, and target events that align with these areas.

That might mean supporting major institutes like the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity or the Burnet Institute, or focusing on economic, social, or community-driven impact. It is not one-size-fits-all. We decide where we can genuinely add value, both for our local community and for the international delegates.

How is Melbourne working with regional partners in Asia-Pacific to strengthen the region’s appeal?
Asia is a growth market for us at the moment, especially post-Covid. We have built strong partnerships in China, Singapore, and Japan, including having team members on the ground in Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, and India.

We have also just launched a major China strategy and marketing campaign with an A$43 million (US$28 million) budget, reflecting the importance of that market and our commitment to developing tailored partnerships, often involving government, trade, and educational sectors. It was the biggest government delegation our state has sent to China of that nature.

We also recently partnered with Trip.com, one of the largest OTAs in the world, which has a very strong partnership with Victoria.

Looking ahead, what does the next phase of collaboration look like for CVBs?
Having just returned from China, it is really interesting to see how client needs are changing. Whether that is partnering with wildlife charities for CSR work in the Australian bush, working with homeless charities, local education institutes, or other community groups, we are seeing some clients with a large number of people coming who are prepared to give up half a day as part of their programme.

Sustainability remains huge for us too. We are proud that Melbourne recently ranked number one in the Asia Pacific on the GDS Index, which reflects our ongoing investment in creating a sustainable business events ecosystem and a valuable toolkit component we can offer clients. Moving forward, we want to double down and do more of that, to keep innovating collaboratively for a positive legacy.

Hong Kong welcomes new tourism lawmaker

0

Vivian Kong Man-wai has been elected to represent the tourism functional constituency in Hong Kong’s Legislative Council following the 2025 Legislative Council General Election held on December 7, 2025.

Kong succeeds Perry Yiu, who held the tourism seat for the past four years. She secured 131 votes, defeating her sole opponent Ma Yat Chiu, who received 23 votes. Kong was the youngest lawmaker elected in the election.

Since August 2024, Kong has worked as assistant external affairs manager at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, where her responsibilities include promoting horse-racing tourism. On December 29, 2025, the government appointed her as a member of the Tourism Strategy Committee for a term running from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027.

The Agency Team brings Silent Seminars to APAC

Singapore-based The Agency Team has partnered with Silent Seminars to serve as its official Asia-Pacific representative to lead marketing, sales, and project management for the brand’s specialised headset technology.

Silent Seminars provides a communication and learning environment where participants use individual wireless headsets to listen to presentations and discussions without external noise interference. The system utilises a central audio hub that streams high-quality content directly to each participant’s device.

“This approach enhances focus, minimises disruptions, and allows for a more personalised experience. It is especially effective when noise control is a priority or when several sessions are occurring in close proximity,” explained Patrick Lim, director at The Agency Team.

Because of this technology, users are no longer restricted to traditional hotel ballrooms. Venues can now transform non-traditional spaces – such as outdoor lawns or restaurants – into functional conference areas. Even hotels with limited breakout rooms can now host multiple sessions simultaneously in the same hall without audio overlap or disturbance.

Lim noted that for the Asia-Pacific region specifically, this technology will help bridge language gaps across diverse cultures. It also serves as a tool for inclusivity, supporting neurodivergent delegates and those with sensory needs.

“These headsets can offer access to simultaneous interpretation in multiple languages. They also benefit autistic attendees by providing a controlled environment where they can focus on the presentation without the distraction of ambient noise, and can even enhance the experience for individuals with partial visual impairment through dedicated audio descriptions,” he elaborated.

When asked about capacity limits, Lim shared about the scale of Silent Seminars’ operations: “Since we have offices located around the world, group size is never an issue. If additional headsets are required, we have the infrastructure to deliver them to any location globally.”

Mama Shelter Zurich

Medium Mama room

Rooms
I stayed in a 19m2 Medium Mama room, with ample space for a solo business traveller or a couple. The room felt inviting, which according to Mama Shelter Zurich “channels an urban chalet aesthetic” featuring chocolate motifs on carpets, tactile textures, and hazelnut-coloured curtains.

The windows faced the city and its surrounds, but as I was on the sixth floor, my view was limited. The higher floors would probably have better views. There was also a smart TV I did not turn on, and I found the Wi-Fi reliable, and speedy.

My Asian upbringing makes me a bit wary of the Looney Tunes masks in the bedroom, but these are pure Mama Shelter. Once you hear the story behind them from the staff, they transform from ‘superstitious’ to a truly playful touch in the cosy space.

I was based there for a couple of nights and slept well every night, cocooned in the wonderfully-warm blankets on an extremely comfortable bed. The pillows were on the firmer side, which I liked as well – some hotels I need to stack two to feel comfortable.

I also liked the bathroom layout. The walk-in shower felt spacious, and thanks to a floor-to-ceiling glass panel, I did not have to worry about water spraying everywhere. They also provide organic toiletries in large bottles.

MICE facilities
Mama Shelter Zurich’s quirkily-decorated first floor features four studios, three ateliers, Mama Create (a creative space), a banquet room, and a break room in the centre with coffee machines, tea, bottles of water, and lollipops for that sugar rush. All spaces are fully modular, come with the necessary tech equipment, and can be adapted to an event planner’s needs. The entire floor can hold up to 200 people comfortably.

I really liked the mountain-inspired curtains, juxtaposed against the brightly coloured chairs and sofas. I can picture how the venue can help inspire creativity, collaboration, and meaningful exchanges. There are also four private phone booths are available for business calls.

During the Asia Trophy 2025 organised by the Switzerland Convention & Incentive Bureau, this space was utilised as a dinner location and gathering spot by the 70 travel agents.

Other facilities
Mama’s Restaurant was lively throughout the day, serving a buffet breakfast for hotel guests, as well as functioning as an all-day dining restaurant serving burgers and pizzas to the general public. It is connected to a bar and terrace.

Behind the check-in counters is a lounge that feels just like an eclectic living room, complete with plush couches and a giant anchor clock. There are plenty of vibrantly coloured alcoves and chairs to choose from. It was where I spent four comfortable hours working after checking out, waiting for my late-night flight.

It was a joy finding surprises in every corner; from neon art pieces and foosball tables to pinball machines and even free-to-play arcade games

Aside from the gym on the first floor, there is also a large, leafy rooftop called Mama’s Garden, open only in the summer.

Service
Most of the staff were welcoming and helpful with information and various requests, save for one grumpy individual I encountered on the night shift.

Verdict
Do not let its hard edges fool you. The first Mama Shelter in Switzerland thrives on a striking architectural paradox: a cold, Brutalist exterior that gives way to a kaleidoscopic interior bursting with colour, quirk, and life.

I thought the location – just across from Zurich Oerlikon train station – was extremely convenient. Following this exceptional introduction to Mama Shelter, I am looking for an excuse to visit another. As luck would have it, one has just opened its doors in Singapore!

A new era for mining

0

Event brief
Asia-Pacific’s International Mining Exhibition (AIMEX) began its 10 year residency in South Australian with the 2025 edition held in September, hosted at the Adelaide Showground.

Organised by Prime Creative Media, AIMEX showcased the state’s strength in resources, technology, and sustainability. The event spanned three days, featuring a mix of exhibition showcases, conference sessions and networking events

Each AIMEX contributes A$45 million (US$30.3 million) to the State economy and will be held biennially in Adelaide until 2033.

Event highlights
AIMEX 2025 featured over 230 exhibitors, 80 speakers, and 5,389 delegates across a 15,000m² exhibition floor.

The 2025 exhibition floor featured an expanded range of exhibitors, with top industry players including TriCab, Blackwoods, Sandvik, ifm, Motion Australia, Makita, Hitachi Digital Services and Ford all captivating attendees with fresh advancements and state-of-the-art solutions.

The conference programme saw industry experts share their insight across the two dedicated conference stages during the three-day event.

Highlights included sessions on decarbonisation through innovation, South Australia’s copper advantage, and the Green Iron SA consortium. Highlights included Australia’s strategic copper advantage and South Australia’s role in transforming the global steel landscape through the Green Iron SA consortium.

Attendees also heard compelling case studies, such as the digital transformation driven by the partnership between Bengalla Mining Company and Hitachi, and a groundbreaking collaboration between Gold Fields and Sandvik, which has delivered exceptional gains in efficiency, safety, and productivity.

The event series kicked off with a Welcome Reception at the National Wine Centre of Australia the night before AIMEX commenced, where attendees enjoyed exceptional South Australian wine and food in an iconic setting that reflected Adelaide’s reputation for sophistication.

This momentum carried through to the Australian Mining Prospect Awards at Adelaide Oval; with its breathtaking views and world-famous scoreboard, this iconic location provided an unforgettable backdrop that impressed attendees and helped the awards put their best foot forward while celebrating industry excellence.

A particular highlight of the evening was Alligator Energy’s Big Lake uranium project taking out the Discovery of the Year award. As a significant new discovery in South Australia’s Lake Eyre Basin, it was thrilling to recognise and celebrate a local company’s success on a national scale.

Beyond the awards, AIMEX served as a powerful catalyst for industry partnership. A standout example was the collaboration between two of our speakers: Jason Sharam (Resources Centre of Excellence, Queensland) and Renee Hakendorf (CORE Innovation Hub, Adelaide).

Following their participation in the conference programme, their connection resulted in a signed MoU between their respective organisations. This partnership will see the CORE Innovation Hub and Resources Centre of Excellence work closely together to foster innovation in the resources sector nationwide.

Challenges
The transition of AIMEX to South Australia presented logistical and strategic challenges, including establishing local partnerships and ensuring strong attendance for a new host city.

However, proactive collaboration with Business Events Adelaide, Invest SA and other state government agencies ensured a seamless execution and strong delegate engagement.
