Tourism Fiji launches Asian roadshow

Months after establishing a second events team to power up its pursuit of international business events, Tourism Fiji has moved to launch an annual Asia Roadshow in Malaysia and Singapore, with the first held in Malaysia and Singapore across two days in January.

Speaking to TTGmice while in Singapore, Kathy Koyamaibole, regional manager Asia, Tourism Fiji, said the roadshows will allow her team to connect with trade partners in the two markets.

Tourism Fiji regards Malaysia and Singapore as source markets with “huge potential for growth”.

While arrivals from Asia comprise a “small percentage” currently, she is confident that this number will grow.

Valerie Yee, general manager of Travco World Events Singapore, agrees that interest in Fiji is growing although she has yet to sell the destination.

“Our clients are always looking for exotic places for incentive trips so Fiji has the potential to sell,” Yee explained.

Pamela Chun, MICE senior sales manager, ASA Holidays, expressed that the presence of five-star hotels in Fiji assures her of the quality of business events facilities.

However, Fiji’s distance from Singapore – a long flight of over 10 hours – remains a bugbear for some agents.

Travelstop makes debut in seven Asian markets

Singapore-based Travelstop has launched its business travel and expense management platform in seven Asian markets – Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam.

This follows its recent seed funding from Singapore venture capital firm SeedPlus.

Available in seven languages, including Bahasa Indonesia, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Travelstop automates expense reporting for businesses, and offers support for regional tax differences, reporting formats, payment options. The company plans to introduce customer service to its users in local languages in the near future.

“Many companies in Asia have offices in multiple countries across the region. Our goal is to provide these users with the best possible experience in their local language and currency, while ensuring that we offer the most relevant booking options,” said Prashant Kirtane, Travelstop’s co-founder and CEO, in a statement.

“We now offer the largest selection of flights in the region, with over 800 carriers, including most regional and low-cost carriers.”

Travelstop has also added several new features to further support business travellers and travel managers within the region.

With its new Book for Others feature, Travelstop aims to improve the productivity of travel managers by replacing a largely manual process, with a simple, online process to book travel for employees within a company. This is particularly useful for companies that prefer to more tightly control the business travel booking process or in countries where technology acceptance is generally lower.

For business travellers, adherence to a company’s travel policy is both cumbersome and challenging, often resulting in business travel bookings that are either over-budget or out-of-policy.

To address this, Travelstop has introduced a method for travel managers to set up Business Travel Policies for all their employees. Once set up, business travel bookings that are outside of travel policies are automatically flagged during the booking process, allowing companies to improve overall compliance and reduce costs.

The Asian region also continues to see a rapid increase in the adoption of mobile devices across countries in the region. Globally, Asia has the largest share of mobile internet traffic, with 61 per cent of its population using mobile devices to go online.

As such, Travelstop has also launched its iPhone app to help users access their trip information and manage their business expenses on-the-go. An Android version will be available in the next few months.

“Our goal is to make employees more productive; they no longer have to return from their business trips and spend hours dealing with the much-dreaded expense claims process,” said Altaf Dhamani, Travelstop’s co-founder and chief product officer.

AHRA advocates lifelong learning for its members

The ASEAN Hotels and Restaurants Association (AHRA) will incorporate a “learning journey” for its board members at each destination where its meetings are held.

Eugene Yap, AHRA president and general manager of Bayview Park Hotel in Manila, said: “There are many hotel and restaurant developments in the region. When visiting such projects, we can learn about the new trends in technology, and new designs in the hotel and restaurant businesses. We can also visit restaurants, both new and old, to learn what they are doing to reflect the local culture and services.”

Industry players can learn from each other to better their services

Apart from broadening industry knowledge of AHRA members, the learning journey may provide inspiration for their business in their home countries. As such, Yap revealed that this learning journey would be made “part of the procedure now”.

Furthermore, the arrival of more international hotel brands into South-east Asia also brings along a wave of new trends that the region’s industry players can learn from, said Yap.

At the meeting, AHRA also brought up issues the sector is facing, such as the application of employment standards, and hotel safety and security, which it would bring up at the ASEANTA meeting.

“Hospitality is an evolving industry, so we need to relook the standards all the time (in order to) evolve,” he said.

AMEX GBT forecasts stable air fares overall; with fluctuations on some major routes

The report finds that there is minimal fare movement on most routes

The Air Monitor 2019, published by American Express Global Business Travel (AMEX GBT), finds that fare levels should remain stable on many of the world’s major air routes in 2019.

Capacity and growing competition, including new low-cost carriers on longhaul routes, will likely restrain fare rises on key routes from Europe and Asia-Pacific, even as the global economy is forecast to grow and airlines face rising operating costs. However, current economic and political uncertainties and developments may impact the forecast.

The report finds that there is minimal fare movement on most routes

There are some exceptions to the projection of stable air fares: demand growth in premium classes across North America is forecast to outstrip capacity growth, meaning buyers could see significant price rises on these fares within the region and to Europe. In contrast, fares to Middle East destinations are forecast to fall from all regions, in both business and economy classes. Overcapacity on Middle Eastern routes is the chief factor in the expected price fall.

For the Asia-Pacific, despite expecting both India and China to grow at a slower pace in 2019, a forecast growth rate of 6.3 per cent still makes the Asia-Pacific region the fastest growing set of countries. The outlook for fares across the Asia-Pacific is stable, supported by the strong economies of India, China and Australia. Meanwhile, fares are likely to reduce in price across Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore due to the impact of financial sector slowdown and the loss of premium class traffic.

To generate the forecast, the Global Business Consulting team scanned AMEX GBT’s data lake to examine five years of flight transaction data. This analysis was combined with variables including oil prices, economic projections and airline strategies to forecast price changes on key business travel routes around the world.

Ascott boosts global portfolio with 26 properties in 18 cities

Singapore-headquartered Ascott has secured contracts for another 26 properties with over 4,600 units across 18 cities and 11 countries.

The new additions boost its portfolio to over 100,000 units.

In 2018, Ascott added over 30,000 units across 189 properties.

Ascott has entered the Netherlands market with the signing of Citadines Sloterdijk Station Amsterdam, a franchised property in Amsterdam. It has also expanded its presence in China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the UAE and the UK. The company’s global footprint now extends to 172 cities across 33 countries.

The company is on track to achieve its target of 160,000 units worldwide by 2023, said Ascott’s CEO Kevin Goh, in a statement.

Balloons Over Bagan soars to new state in Myanmar

Soar above the Kayah State, home to no less than 10 ethnic groups

Balloons Over Bagan, under Myanmar-based Memories Group, has launched a new hot-air balloon flight in Kayah State.

Hot-air balloon rides in Loikaw take off at sunrise on a daily basis throughout the year and can carry six to eight passengers per flight. Air time lasts one to two hours, and balloons will reach a maximum altitude of 10,000 feet. Flights cost US$300 per person. Private charters for groups up to eight persons can also be requested.

Balloon Safaris Loikaw is the fourth option hot-air balloon adventure from the tour operator, following Bagan, Inle Lake and a two-day “balloon safari” in Shan State.

Situated on a 914m-high plateau surrounded by mountains and rice paddies in eastern Myanmar, Loikaw is home to ethnic groups including the Kayan, whose “long-necked” women are famed for the brass coils around their necks and colourful traditional costumes.
