Destination Asia Malaysia launches PCO arm

Destination Asia Malaysia has opened a new PCO division to meet the growing demand for specialist management of conferences and events in Malaysia.

The division will provide finance and integrated product solutions, comprising website design and online services, online and on-site registration systems, speakers and abstracts management system. It will also offer research services, venue sourcing and contracting, alongside complete event management including ground services.

Leading the Kuala Lumpur-based team are Grace Chong as director, conference and incentives, and Anitha Krishnan as business development and conference planner.

Chong will spearhead the PCO business to create new opportunities in the events sector, while Anitha will lead bidding strategies, provide trade support to key decision makers and conduct site inspections.

IHG makes MICE bookings in Thailand easier for bookers

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has recently launched a dedicated landing page, http://miceasia.ihg.com/thailand/ , for MICE events at its hotels and resorts across Thailand.

The dedicated portal, available in English, Thai and Mandarin, is aimed at facilitating the booking of meetings and events at 19 hotels and resorts across eight cities in the country. Bookers will be able to obtain detailed descriptions and visuals of the meetings spaces in each property to special promotional packages available at selected properties.

“As a MICE destination, Thailand has immense potential for growth. In 2015 the country was named Asia’s top MICE destination last year, and with the government’s plan to promote the country as the MICE centre of South-east Asia, we see an opportunity to grow our market share in this segment,” said Lincoln Barrett, vice president, sales & marketing, South-east Asia and Korea, IHG.

“We are confident that investing in a page dedicated to providing our loyal guests and bookers with all the information they need at their fingertips will go a long way in helping us gain a stronger foothold with our MICE offerings,” he added.

Clients who make bookings for meetings and events at any IHG hotel or resort in Thailand via the landing page will also benefit from the company’s IHG Business Rewards programme.

IHG currently operates 19 hotels and resorts across five brands in Thailand, with a further 15 hotels and resorts to open over the next three to five years.

Kagoshima avails tram rental options for event planners

Kagoshima’s transportation bureau has made available three types of trams for group rental.

For the first option, the event tram, groups can tailor the route, travelling time and style.

Richard Pedlingham, founder of boutique and event space recife&teresa, welcomed the service, saying that it allows event delegates to “move through the heart of our city” and offers the flexibility for groups to “bring your own DJs, food and drink, customising it to your own particular taste”.

Starting at 16,000 yen (US$141) for a three-hour round trip, and the space to accommodate 23 to 28 people, independent event planner Chris Lawson said the event tram is good value.

Lawson added: “The tram also provides opportunities for social receptions and to have meetings with a difference, by taking small groups out of the usual venues.”

For the second option, guests can enjoy thematic trams – some decorated like a polar bear, where the name stems from the prefecture’s iconic dessert of shaved ice topped with fruit – and customise the route.

The third option is a retro tram that is suited for groups keen on exploring the city’s highlights.

Shinpei Otani, a spokesperson of the Kagoshima City Transportation Bureau, said the 70-minute sightseeing course is led by a volunteer guide.

ASAE enhances support for newly-independent Chinese associations

The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) has started to provide education to newly-independent Chinese associations that have been weaned off government funding and management, a process that is gaining steam in China and transforming the country’s associations landscape.

Chinese associations must now learn how to be sustainable and survive on their own which means being able to generate their own income, and to achieve that requires professionalising their association management, a concept not yet well accepted, said Maria Tong, ASAE’s China representative.

Since the establishment of an ASAE office in Beijing three years ago, it has started educating associations about their role in the society and ways to professionalise, Tong said on the sidelines of the Associations Summit 4, organised by the Philippine Council of Associations and Association Executives last week.

In the long term, she said ASAE wants to be the thought leader in China and to be the platform for linking China associations’ international counterparts.

Tong said it takes time for the Chinese government to recognise ASAE’s position but things are improving now with the government enabling associations, which are mainly government-managed and funded, to be independent.

ICESAP Conference introduces daily delegate rate

A special daily piece-meal delegate rate arrangement has been introduced for the coming ICESAP Conference in Singapore, which will kick off this Wednesday.

Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) met 40 specially selected Association Buyers and PCOs handling association meetings at the recent destination roadshow in Singapore on the 27th of October 2016, co-organised by IT&CM Events.

Convention Visitor Bureaus (CVBs) from 7 major cities – Chiba, Hiroshima, Kitakyushu, Matsue, Okayama, Okinawa, Sapporo – were flown in from Japan by JNTO for an exclusive presentation session with buyers from Singapore.

The roadshow also offered prospective buyers an insight into Japan’s latest infrastructure, facilities and capabilities, government and municipal support, as well as the incentives available to encourage organisers to explore regions outside of the usual metropolitan cities to host their next association meetings.

Aiming to increase the number of international association meetings and conferences from overseas to Japan, Mr Masatoshi Miyake, Executive Director, JNTO, reinforced, “Japan’s position is a unique one. We are the centre of research and industry, which enables technical visits and networking opportunities to be easily organised. Our country showcases a surprising variety of tradition, hospitality, and innovation as well as geographic diversity – an excellent assortment of culture, activities, and destinations to satisfy an event’s business, education, and social networking objectives.”

In April, JNTO’s Singapore office officially expanded its support services to meetings and incentive planners in Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, and India.

Coupled with previous collaborative successes and the Asia-Pacific’s increasing potential for MICE in hosting major conferences, JNTO’s partnership with IT&CM Events for the 3rdyear running was an unequivocal one, reiterating the breadth and depth of IT&CM Events’ capabilities of going beyond mere trade shows and appointments to add value by providing alternative platforms for clients to create business opportunities.

Kitakyushu’s first participation at the roadshow proved productive, expressed Mr Nobuhiro Abe, Convention Promotion Manager, Kitakyushu Convention Bureau, “We were selected by JNTO as a MICE Growth City, hence our mission to increase the number of international conferences to Kitakyushu. We were able to meet prospective association buyers and organisers all in one location, which was very beneficial in promoting our city out of Japan.”

Returning for the 2nd year, Miyako Kawakami, Manager, Sapporo Convention Bureau, added, “Sapporo’s reputation as an Incentive Travel destination speaks for itself. However, the brand recognition and awareness of Sapporo as the top choice destination for Association and Corporate meetings still needs to be developed within the Asia-Pacific. Our participation last year was great for building the groundwork among industry players. This year, we wanted to strengthen that image and make it our key objective.”

The half-day event included an enriching talk on Meetings Planning insights by Ms Janet Tan-Collis, President of Singapore Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (SACEOS), a networking coffee break, and a lucky draw giveaway with gifts generously sponsored by each Convention Visitor Bureau from the various cities in Japan.

PICC to add new exhibition space, museum as part of upgrading plans

The Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) is expanding with the construction of a museum already started and the building of a new trade and exhibition hall beginning next year.

The museum will display historical artefacts and art currently curated at the existing museum of the Central Bank of the Philippines, revealed PICC general manager Renato Padilla on the sidelines of the Philippine Council of Associations and Association Executives (PCAAE) Associations Summit 4 gathering.

He said that the museum will be an added attraction for event delegates and will complement PICC as a MICE venue.

Meanwhile, the planned PICC Trade Exhibit Hall will replace the space currently known as The Forum, a tented 4,000m2 multipurpose facility.

The new venue will be much bigger at 5,700m2 and will be a permanent structure located separate from the existing PICC edifice and can be divided into three smaller halls. Facilities include pre-function lobbies, loading bays and service pantries.

Padilla added that the 40-year-old PICC is undergoing upgrading works by phases and will be replacing old bulbs with more efficient LED lighting and moving to inverter air conditioning systems.

Furnishing, equipment and faster internet speeds are also part of the enhancements to keep pace with competition.

AFECA names best in Asia’s MICE industry at second awards ceremony

The Asian Federation of Exhibition and Convention Associations (AFECA) celebrated its 11th anniversary and held its second AFECA Awards ceremony in Xiamen earlier this month in recognition of the best performers in the industry in Asia.

AFECA board members and advisory council members, including president Walter Yeh, honorary president Dilys Yong and president of Xiamen Convention & Exhibition Association (XMCEA) Zheng Zhi, awarded important members and individuals for their contributions over the past year during the event.

Awards handed out include the Outstanding Trade Exhibition, Outstanding Consumer Exhibition, Outstanding Convention/Congress Award, Outstanding Service Award, the Young Professional Award as well as the Outstanding Venue Award, the first time it is being presented.

“This year marks the 2nd AFECA Awards, and after last year’s success, we received even more interest and nominations this year. All nominees represent excellence and outstanding performance in the Asian MICE industry and showcases how far the industry has advanced over the past years,” said Yeh.

In conjunction, starting this year, winners will be given a symbol of recognition by AFECA. These AFECA Recognized logos – split into AFECA Recognized Event, AFECA Recognized Venue and AFECA Recognized Service Provider categories – is an endorsement of quality, innovation and sustainability of organisers by the association.

Istanbul CVB unveils free marketing collaterals toolkit for event planners

MICE planners now have more reason to hold their events in Turkey’s most populous city with the launch of Istanbul CVB’s new Istanbul Event Planners’ Toolkit.

The free kit contains ready-to-use templates of print ads, flyers, banners, posters, standees, seasonal postcards, powerpoint presentations and social media posts as well as high-res photos, videos and logos of Istanbul.

The CVB stated that the kit is designed to provide associations with easy-to-use, comprehensive marketing tools for congresses and events held in Istanbul and can be customised according to their needs.

General manager of Istanbul CVB, Ozgul Ozkan Yavuz, said: “Istanbul continues to be one of the top places for meetings and conferences. We have been witnessing a busy congress calendar especially for October and November.

“With all the feedback gathered from the associations, organisers as well as our members, we have decided to release this marketing tool to put together different materials in one convenient package. We believe that this kit will help planners to promote their event in Istanbul more effectively and will boost the number of delegates for their meetings and events.”

Japan tour operator uses geisha arts to lure more groups

The Do Edo programme by Japanese tour company Shin-Nichiya is tapping MICE demand for authentic local experiences with a new Tokyo-based dinner and entertainment package featuring geishas.

Time to Geisha is hosted in Kyoraku-tei, a traditional Japanese venue inside the Coredo shopping, dining, and cultural complex in Nihonbashi.

During the show, geishas perform a variety of dances accompanied by a trio of musicians on the shamisen, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument. They then lead guests in interactive games such as Tora Tora Tora, a historic game once played by maikos and geishas at tea houses.

The performance is offered as a 60-minute evening show that runs twice a month at a cost of 5,500 yen (US$52), while the new dinner and entertainment package starts at 10,800 yen and builds on existing cultural activities for MICE groups in the building, including making sushi or sweets, calligraphy or flower arranging.

Groups of up to 30 people can be accommodated.
