Thailand launches Carbon Trading Platform to green up events

Marking sustainable events in Thailand with carbon offset that generates benefits for local communities will soon become a possibility

A consortium of five Thai organisations has come together to unveil a carbon trading platform designed to promote sustainable events in the country.

The platform, a first of its kind in Thailand, aims to facilitate carbon offsetting for small and medium enterprises, with a particular focus on the business events industry and tourism sector. Named Carbon Neutrality 4 All, the platform is currently undergoing a pilot phase with individual travellers and is set to be introduced to business events entrepreneurs later this year.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand, Ministry of Interior, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), and The Central Group. The five signed a Memorandum of Understanding last week during the soft launch of the platform in Bangkok.

A key feature of the platform is its ability to connect event organisers with carbon credits generated from local community-based waste management projects. By offsetting carbon emissions through the platform, businesses can contribute to environmental sustainability while also supporting local economies. In return, event organisers will earn points redeemable for discounts at participating retail stores.

The platform incorporates advanced technology, including the CERO application for carbon footprint calculation and AI integration. This enables event organisers to easily track and reduce their carbon emissions, while attendees can monitor their own environmental impact through the Green Activities feature.

This is a significant step towards Thailand’s net zero carbon goal.

Sarawak recently hosted the 10th World Congress of Herpetology (WCH10), where the five-day gathering in early August welcomed 1,485 herpetologists from around the globe.

Organised by the Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation (IBEC), UNIMAS, and supported by Business Events Sarawak (BE Sarawak), the event concluded on August 9, 2024.

The congress brought together the world’s leading experts in reptiles and amphibians to share knowledge, conduct research, and collaborate on conservation efforts. Sarawak’s rich biodiversity provided an ideal backdrop for this significant event.

Richard Griffiths, secretary-general elect of the World Congress of Herpetology, emphasised the importance of such a large gathering.

“The sheer number of herpetologists in Kuching demands attention. This concentration of expertise can do wonders for the conservation of herpetofauna in Sarawak,” he said.

Griffiths highlighted the challenges faced in conserving reptiles and amphibians compared to more charismatic animals. WCH10 is a crucial platform to increase awareness and prioritize herpetology conservation, he added.

Mona Abdul Manap, managing director of Place Borneo, the event’s PCO, emphasised the long-term impact of hosting such prestigious events.

“The importance of events of this scale and prestige goes beyond tourism dollars and tourist arrivals. More important is the legacy it leaves behind and that is up to us the local hosts, how we would like the event to impact Sarawak, its people, its environment, or even policy-making change,” she said.

Mark O’Shea, a conference delegate, praised the event as a platform for sharing ideas and fostering collaboration. He expressed his enthusiasm for returning to Sarawak for potential future projects.

Event brief
The Philippines successfully secured the hosting of two major United Nations (UN) tourism events. In addition to chairing the 36th Joint Meeting of the UN Tourism Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the Commission for South Asia, the country also brought the inaugural UN Gastronomy Tourism Forum for Asia Pacific to Cebu.

These events highlighted the Philippines’ hospitality, tourism offerings, and rich culinary heritage on the global stage.

Event highlights
In a spirit of unity and cooperation, both private and government representatives from across the Philippines convened in Cebu. Even Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Jr graced the occasion.

The Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa hosted the gastronomy forum, while the Sheraton Mactan Cebu Resort served as the venue for the joint commission meeting.

A technical tour was scheduled between the two main events, offering delegates the opportunity to explore the Camotes Islands, the neighbouring towns of Argao and Dalaguete, or the eco-tourism attractions of Aloguinsan.

Renowned chefs showcased their culinary expertise by whipping up dishes from all 16 regions of the Philippines. Keen attention was paid to sourcing the finest ingredients, including giant tuna, fresh produce, and unique spices from various provinces.

The event was also filled with vibrant Filipino culture, featuring captivating dances, live music, and even a fashion show. These elements contributed to a festive and joyful atmosphere throughout the three-day event.

Challenges
Given the high-profile nature of the event, with attendees including the president and foreign dignitaries, stringent protocols were enacted for security, emergency preparedness, and guest accommodations. Discreetly positioned tourist police provided an added layer of protection at event venues and hotels.

To ensure seamless delegate arrival and departure, the Department of Tourism coordinated with tourism students to provide round-the-clock hospitality services at Manila and Cebu airports and host hotels.

Managing two concurrent international events across separate resorts required meticulous planning and resource allocation. Efficient supply chain management, including sourcing ingredients, promotional materials, and documentation, was crucial to the event’s success.

Strong collaboration between Cebu’s government, private sector, and national stakeholders was instrumental in overcoming logistical challenges and delivering exceptional experiences.
