BCD Meetings & Events (BCD M&E) has added Taiwan-based G-Concept, part of GIS Group, to its Global Partner Network, to better serve customers in need of larger, global scope with local delivery in Taiwan.

“When we look to grow specific markets, we make a strategic decision to either expand our wholly-owned operations or partner with local businesses to serve our customers,” said Scott Graf, global president of BCD M&E, adding that these partners bring an “understanding of local business nuance” to the table.

Indonesia wants stronger promotion of country’s MICE prowess

Indonesia’s business events industry is calling for overseas government-led sales missions to focus on winning more event and incentive bids, as well as the formation of a dedicated ministry department to bring in more large-scale B2B events to realise the country’s under-tapped MICE potential.

Chinese corporate incentives have been growing in recent years, but the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism’s overseas MICE sales missions had more leisure than events industry participants, observed Bambang Sugiono, director of marketing and overseas promotions of RD Tours.

Indonesia seeks more large-scale business events

“It is about time that the government dedicate sales missions with tabletop sessions for conference and incentive planners, and business forums with corporates. This will work particularly with the China and Indian markets,” he noted.

Andreas Rungkat, director of convention services, Jakarta Convention Center, and chairman of the MICE Acceleration Team – comprised of industry members and formed by the Ministry of Tourism – agreed, adding it was precisely what the team has recommended.

“We have been handling a couple of B2B exhibitions from China at JCC and we believe this is a huge market that we need to tap,” he added in response to TTGmice’s question on the role of business events in Indonesia’s tourism development strategy in the next five years.

In addition, with the government placing a stronger emphasis on growing tourism revenue over arrival volumes, growing the business events sector would be the most realistic way to achieve this target, said minister of national development planning Bambang Brodjonegoro.

Bambang added the Ministry of Tourism will be the coordinating agency in developing “a better strategy to bring more events to the country”.

“What is happening now is that business events are organised sporadically among the ministries, government agencies and private sector. The IMF-World Bank event, for example, began with an initiative from the Ministry of Finance,” he revealed.

In addition, Budi Tirtawisata, chairman of the Indonesia Convention and Exhibition Bureau – a private sector organisation – called for “a dedicated deputy minister at the Ministry of Tourism to take care of the business events sector”.

However, Andreas opined that there should be a dedicated agency for business events that was not part of a ministry, and instead be directly under the office of the president.

Going forward, Arief Yahya, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, said the ministry will be setting aside a budget to bid for events. This comes as business events stakeholders have also requested the government to develop a scheme to fund bids and subvention programmes to attract events.

Suwon Convention Center (SCC)

South Korea’s newest meeting space, the Suwon Convention Centre (SCC) is expected to help the city of Suwon – about 30km south of Seoul – rise to compete on the global business events stage.

The SCC features two underground and five above ground floors, housing a total of 28 meeting rooms. The central space of the building is its first floor main exhibition hall, which at 7,800m2, is larger than the Suwon Athletic Complex soccer field. Just outside the convention building is a Sky Park, where visitors can enjoy a view of Gwanggyo Lake Park.

The Korea MICE Bureau has revealed that the centre is “already in high demand, with a fully-booked schedule for this year (with) 42 events”.

Plans are afoot to turn part of the convention centre into a complex, which will eventually have a five-star hotel, gallery, department store, and entertainment facilities.

The convention centre is located about a 10-minute walk from the Gwanggyo Central Station, or about an hour by limousine bus from Incheon International Airport.

Suwon, the capital and largest city of Gyeonggi-do province, is also home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites – Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. The city is also a major education and business centre, with 11 universities and multiple international business corporations such as Samsung.

Event spaces on offer include classroom style for up to 65 people, cocktail events for 450 people, sit-down dinners or weddings for 370 people, and auditorium events for 430 people.

Aside from being equipped with sophisticated audio-visual equipment and ergonomic seating, the site also has kitchen facilities to cater for large-scale functions.

In addition, visitors to the convention centre will have pedestrian access from Green Square’s new Ebsworth Street and improved public transport access, with the extension of an underground pedestrian walkway and a new wheelchair access lift linking Botany Road’s public plaza with Green Square train station. Delegates will enjoy the convenience of direct access to Green Square train station, being only minutes from Sydney airport and the city.

“(There is also) the added bonus of having more than 20 new retail stores, cafes and restaurants nearby,” revealed Taranto. A new eat street and dining precinct with wine and coffee bars will join the growing Green Square community from mid-year.

Infinity Convention Centre forms part of the A$575 million (US$411 million) mixed-use development, Infinity by Crown Group, which is nearing completion. The compound will also boast a 20-storey building with 326 luxury apartments and a 90-room hotel, as well as a 1,180m2 central landscaped plaza.

The building forms a landmark gateway to the A$13 billion Green Square transformation, which will add a new train station and aquatic centre to the area. This is in addition to the Green Square library that opened last year, which forms the perfect co-working or study space for visitors.

The Ascott’s co-living lyf brand is gaining traction in Asia, making up a trio of signings among the hospitality company’s new 14 contracts clinched to manage 14 properties comprising over 2,000 units in eight countries – China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Saudi Arabia.

Three of the 14 new properties will be under Ascott’s co-living lyf brand, and will be located in the cities of Fukuoka, Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai.

Scheduled to open in 2020 are the 131-unit lyf Fukuoka, located in the city’s major retail and recreational centre, and lyf Raja Chulan Kuala Lumpur, part of the Golden Triangle. The 160-unit lyf Hongqiao Shanghai, located in Hongqiao’s CBD, is set to launch in 2022.

Kevin Goh, Ascott’s CEO, said: “Demand for our lyf-branded co-living properties is gaining ground. We are bringing lyf to Fukuoka, Kuala Lumpur, and Shanghai as the buzzing start-up ecosystems in these cities have given rise to a popular culture of living and co-creating as a community among the millennials.

“Millennials already account for a quarter of Ascott’s customer base; and with our lyf brand, we can seize opportunities presented by the booming millennial generation, set to become the largest spending travel demographic in the near future.”

Besides Singapore, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines where Ascott will be opening lyf properties, the company targets to expand the brand into potential markets like Australia, France, Germany, Indonesia and the UK.

The remaining 11 signings consist of a mix of Somerset and Citadines branded properties, which will progressively open between this year and 2023. They will be located in the following cities: Changchun, Foshan, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzhen in Greater China; Frankfurt; Fukuoko; Gurgaon; Jakarta; Pattaya; and Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia.

One notable property the 100-unit Ascott Riverpark Tower Frankfurt, which will mark the first time Ascott is bringing its premier Ascott The Residence brand to Germany. Tabled for an opening in 2022, the property will be designed by world-famous architect Ole Scheeren.

Goh added: “In addition to the 14 new properties, we secured our first property in Australia under our recently launched Citadines Connect brand of select-service business hotels, extending our product offerings to owners and customers… we will fast-track Ascott’s expansion to achieve our global target of 160,000 units by 2023.”
