Adelaide Convention Centre has launched the Riverbank Hive, a rooftop apiary housing over 250,000 European honey bees aimed at supporting urban biodiversity and hyper-local food production.

Located on the roof of the venue’s Central Building, the six-hive installation is managed by in-house culinary staff trained as apiarists alongside local beekeeper Jake Leske. The hives are projected to yield over 300kg of honey annually, which will be integrated directly into the centre’s culinary programme across pastries, entrees, and main courses.

“The Riverbank Hive is a living example of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and finding new ways to create positive impact beyond our walls,” said Sarah Goldfinch, general manager of Adelaide Convention Centre.

The initiative expands on the venue’s existing sustainability framework. In 2023, Adelaide Convention Centre became the first convention centre globally to achieve EarthCheck Master certification.
