Stricter measures to apply for Bloomberg conference in Singapore

Local and foreign delegates at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum (NEF) next month will be subject to stricter measures, according to Singapore’s The Straits Times.

The forum, to be held from November 16 to 19 at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, is expected to attract more than 300 from 51 countries. Current and former heads of states and global CEOs are slated to be in attendance.

On arrival, foreign delegates will be required to take a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) Covid-19 test and stay in their hotel rooms until the result is confirmed to be negative. They will be exempted from quarantine if their PCR test result is negative.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and Economic Development Board (EDB) also told The Straits Times that all foreign delegates would be required to undergo daily pre-event testing on conference days, on top of being fully vaccinated.

Anyone not attending the NEF but who wishes to have meals or meetings in venues or restaurants designated for the NEF must undergo a mandatory pre-event test and obtain a negative result beforehand.

All forum participants, including locals, will also have to undergo daily pre-event testing on conference days.

These measures are stricter than existing ones for Singaporeans attending larger-scale events, where pre-event testing is required for all attendees unless they are fully vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19 or are aged 12 and below.

Outside of the pre-designated venues and restaurants for NEF participants, the prevailing safe management measures in Singapore will apply to the delegates, including the two-person rule for meals.

Singapore’s latest pandemic restrictions state that dining-in will be limited to a maximum of two people till November 21 as of press time.

Visit Maldives recently launched a global campaign entitled Redefining MICE, during a luncheon held on the sidelines of the MILT Congress that took place in Grand Hyatt Mumbai.

The purpose of this campaign is to promote the Maldives as an emerging top destination for business events, one that seamlessly merges business with leisure through different experiences.

During the launch event, Visit Maldives, along with industry partners Baglioni Resort Maldives & Villa Hotels & Resorts, gave a presentation on offers available for the business events segment, followed by a conference and networking sessions.

Attendees were also provided with the latest destination information and travel guidelines, highlighting the Maldives’ attributes such as its naturally social-distanced geography, and its stringent safety measures.

Activities such as global media campaigns, participation in business events tradeshows, social media campaigns, business events roadshows, distribution of digital brochures and videos, and fam trips, will take place over these two months. There will also be a dedicated landing page for business events on Visit Maldives’ website.

Alan Joyce, CEO, Qantas, said the airline was bringing forward its London-Los Angeles service to November 1, with Canada, Singapore and Japan (Tokyo) and double Los Angeles and London flights on the cards before Christmas.

Joyce added: “In the early New Year we will expand the rest of the network rapidly and all our international aircraft will be back in the air by July next year, except for the A380s, which will take longer.

He pointed out Qantas had signed an agreement with Emirates to help the airline launch internationally, adding that he was “very optimistic about business travel recovering”.

In the case of Accor, Renae Trimble, its chief operating officer, announced the global chain had in place “a global partnership to provide tele-health and medical support across all hotels worldwide” to boost travel confidence.

Trimble said guests would be able to access first-level response medical support in a number of different languages at any Accor property.

She observed it was really important that guests felt that confidence, citing access to medical support was one of the main barriers to travel.

To beef up duty of care, ANZ environmental sustainability change lead, Jeff Elliott named “a zero-tolerance policy on booking” as a major change.

Previously with travel across 33 markets, Elliot acknowledged there were occasional slips.

Elliot commented: “Covid-19 has really brought home the need to have 100 per cent visibility on the location of every traveller, so we can offer real-time support where required. We have increased focus on awareness of individual traveller risk.”

He also pointed to the importance of having a “tailored approach for each individual traveller”, as staff have differing requirements and are of higher risk depending on their medical conditions and age.

“Finally, there is going to be a big consolidation of the duty of care support, responsibilities and decision-making process. By bringing all of those together and having a structured approach will allow us to respond quickly,” Elliot concluded.

The long-delayed Singapore-Australia travel bubble could be established in the next week or so, as both governments enter final talks on the arrangement, revealed Australian prime minister Scott Morrison this morning, according to a report by The Sydney Morning Herald.

The talks are focused on allowing vaccinated students and business travellers to benefit from the arrangement first, before opening up to tourists. Top-most priority is to bring Australians home.

Qantas will restart flights between Singapore and Sydney on November 23, four weeks ahead of schedule

As with Australia’s plans to resume international travel, the Singapore-Australia travel bubble will also depend on the quarantine arrangements of each state. At present, New South Wales and Victoria have removed mandatory hotel quarantine for vaccinated international travellers from November 1.

International visitors may be welcomed “before the end of the year”, said Morrison, but he emphasised that the country’s reopening will not be rushed.

Morrison’s announcement is met quickly by flight adjustments on the part of Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Jetstar.

Singapore Airlines will add daily flights to Sydney from December 1, while Qantas will restart flights between Singapore and Sydney on November 23, four weeks ahead of schedule. Qantas’ Singapore-Sydney operations will run thrice a week with an A330 aircraft, and be ramped up to daily from December 18.

Jetstar will fly from Melbourne and Darwin to Singapore from December 16.

Qantas and Jetstar’s scale-up of Singapore services is part of the airline company’s overall restart of more international flights in preparation for Australia’s planned reopening without quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated arrivals next month.

Commenting on Qantas and Jetstar’s decision to speed up flight resumption to a number of destinations, including Singapore, Australian Tourism Export Council’s managing director Peter Shelley said: “This is another strong sign that Australia is on the path to reopening, giving hope to thousands of tourism businesses who have been left without an income since March 2020.

“While this move is about getting Australians back home and families back together, it will also help the industry to open up and fine tune services for the resumption of full-scale travel.”

New Zealand National Party proposes Back to Business plan

The New Zealand National Party has released a detailed Back to Business plan to support the ailing tourism, hospitality and events sectors in the wake of Covid-19.

Specifically for the events sector, National’s proposal would target unspent money from the NZ$50 million (US$36 million) Regional Events fund to establish an insurance scheme for major events. This would allow major events, such as festivals and concerts going ahead with confidence, avoiding the significant financial losses incurred by organisers, customers and suppliers.

Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA) has welcomed National’s Back to Business plan which would see the government fund the premium for events industry insurance cover.

BEIA chief executive, Lisa Hopkins, shared that she was “pleased to see National’s wider plan”, which “acknowledges the devastation” the business events industry has felt.

Previously, the Government rejected an industry-led proposal to support the NZ$1.5 million premium cost, either directly or through the Regional Events fund, for a NZ$20 million policy cover.

“We had been working on this proposal with our partners EventCover since the end of last year and were able to negotiate with Lloyds, however, the idea was rejected by the Government.

“The business events sector has lost 78 per cent of its value since Covid. Despite this, many businesses have stayed open, albeit with significantly reduced staff and – for the small businesses – off the back of investments and savings,” she elaborated.

Other proposals targeting the larger tourism industry include letting hospitality businesses extend outdoor seating into public spaces wherever safe and practical for the next six months, and providing dine and discover’ vouchers worth NZ$100 to every fully vaccinated adult (18+), which can be spent at any hospitality, accommodation, or tourism business in the country over the next six months.

“Before Covid, tourism was our largest export earner, worth NZ$41 billion to the New Zealand economy and employing more than 400,000 people.

“Tourism, hospitality and events businesses have been badly affected by Covid-19. If they are to contribute to New Zealand’s rebuild, we need them to survive. National is calling on the Labour Government to adopt our plan and support these important Kiwis and their businesses,” National’s spokesperson for tourism and small business Todd McClay said.

New South Wales (NSW) has announced a massive shot in the arm worth more than A$530 million (US$397 million) that will help revive events across the state, according to Business News Australia.

The A$60 million Aviation Attraction Fund to incentivise international airlines to re-commence flights to Sydney, which will support high-yielding international events and international delegate attendance.

The A$150 million to support the recovery of major event activity across the state including A$50 million for a Regional Events Package to support major events, festivals, agricultural shows and community events across the regions.

The A$250 million for the expanded Stay & Rediscover scheme provides a A$50 voucher to all NSW adults to redeem at accommodation premises across NSW. This supports overnight hotel stays for event attendance.

The A$6 million to bring business events back to Greater Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong.

The A$50 million will provide immediate support to organisers if events are cancelled or disrupted by any public health order during the 2021-22 summer.

There will also be A$25 million dedicated towards commercial and not-for-profit festivals; as well as A$10 million put towards a Recovery Marketing Campaign.

Business events stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, and have are ready to help rebuild business confidence and incentivise event organisers.

Geoff Donaghy, CEO of ICC Sydney, said the announcement of the funds is “well-received”, and will help “turbocharge the local visitor economy”.

Meanwhile, BESydney CEO Lyn Lewis-Smith said the funding announcement was a great outcome for Sydney’s business events industry.

Lewis-Smith added: “With restrictions continuing to ease, Sydney is coming back to life and the funding will continue the positive momentum that we are starting to see. People are excited about reconnecting with friends and family and the prospect of travel as borders open. We can’t wait to see that same confidence now flow through to business and to welcome our national and global business delegates back here soon.”

BESydney will administer the funding programme in conjunction with Destination NSW, on behalf of the NSW Government. Matched funding will be available by application in rounds, commencing in late November 2021. Events eligible for funding are conferences, conventions, symposia, congresses, seminars, training courses, trade exhibitions attracting a minimum of 100 delegates to a venue for a gathering of at least one day’s duration.

The Mission Zero capability in its travel booking system Zeno empowers business travellers to make informed booking choices by displaying the carbon offset data associated with flights within the booking flow, prioritising lower emission rental car options, and providing customers with the ability to offset emissions for a net-zero travel programme through an integrated selection of targeted environmental programmes.

With travel contributing around eight per cent of global CO2 emissions, delivering a cleaner travel programme is now a key priority for many travel managers.

Benson Tang, executive director of Corporate Travel Community described the challenge: “In a recent CAPA survey, 74 per cent of travel managers in the Asia Pacific region have told us that sustainability will play an important role in their corporate travel programmes in the next 12 months, and yet for many, it remains difficult for their travellers to make informed decisions when it comes to booking more environmentally friendly options.”

Jo Phipps, Head of Product for Zeno, said, “At Serko, we believe that for a sustainable business travel programme to be realised, individual travellers need to be able to understand how their choice of travel impacts their carbon emissions. IWG expands footprint in Singapore; eyes SE-Asia expansion

IWG, a provider of flexible workspaces, has officially opened a new Regus centre in CapitaLand’s PLUS building at 20 Cecil Street, Singapore.

IWG will be bringing 2,044m2 of flexible workspace under the Regus brand to the heart of the CBD.
