Visit Sunshine Coast has launched a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at connecting conferences, incentive groups and corporate events with local charities and community organisations across the region.

The programme was introduced at an event in Mooloolaba attended by Visit Sunshine Coast members and representatives from six local organisations: SunnyKids, LifeFlight, Smart Pups, Wishlist, Wildlife Warriors and Lookout 07.

The initiative is designed to help event organisers incorporate community, environmental and social projects into their programmes, allowing delegates to contribute to local causes during their stay.

According to Visit Sunshine Coast, the region hosts more than 100 business events each year, generating more than A$100 million (US$65 million) in economic impact. The new programme aims to extend those benefits to local communities through fundraising, volunteer activities and event partnerships.

The six participating organisations support a range of initiatives including children’s welfare, emergency medical services, assistance dogs, healthcare, wildlife conservation and youth mental health.

The destination already has a track record of event-related community projects. The International Mathematical Olympiad contributed to the planting of 60,000 trees globally and 1,200 trees locally, while the O’Brien Advantage Conference funded A$100,000 in upgrades to the Maroochydore Neighbourhood Centre. The Austbrokers Conference, and the Frame & Truss Manufacturers Association Conference each raised more than A$10,000 for local causes.

Ali Thompson-Ennis, head of business events at Visit Sunshine Coast, said: “Business events have always delivered significant economic benefits for the Sunshine Coast, but increasingly organisers are looking to create a meaningful legacy as well.

“This initiative makes it easy for event planners to connect with local charities and causes that align with their values, helping conferences and incentive groups leave a positive impact on our community while enhancing the delegate experience.

“It’s another way the Sunshine Coast is demonstrating that we are the responsible choice for business events.”
