Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) has launched a food waste management pilot at the IUPAC 51st World Polymer Congress (MACRO 2026), running July 28 to 31 in Kuching.
The Zero Food Waste to Landfill initiative aims to secure international certification through The Pledge on Food Waste. Operational measures – including menu planning, portion control, and surplus ingredient recovery – are being implemented at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching and The Waterfront Hotel Kuching for the event’s 800-plus delegates.

The pilot is conducted alongside the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry, BCCK, The Waterfront Hotel, and Conference Partners Asia. All waste metrics are logged via a compliance platform and independently audited, with final results expected following the event.
“Achieving The Pledge on Food Waste Certification will prove that sustainable food waste management can be built into large-scale business events successfully. More than that, it will give future conferences a practical model to follow – setting a new benchmark for sustainable business events in Sarawak,” added Jason Tan Chin Foo, CEO of BESarawak.
