Preparations are ramping up for Green x Expo 2027, the six-month global horticultural event set to be hosted by Yokohama from March 19 to September 26 next year.
Intended to offer new approaches to mankind’s relationship with the Earth, the fair will be Japan’s first hosting of the highest level of an international horticultural exposition since 1990. Some 15 million visitors from home and abroad are expected to attend the 100-hectare venue and related events in the city.

In addition to accelerating initiatives to grow horticulture, landscaping and agriculture, the Expo aims to help realise a society where people and nature coexist while promoting the preservation of traditional culture and regional resources, and the utilisation of environmental technologies, according to the organiser, Green x Expo Association.
Another aspect of their mission is setting a good example. In June, they obtained ISO 20121:2024 in event sustainability management from the International Organization for Standardization, making the expo the first large-scale international horticultural exhibition approved by the International Association of Horticultural Producers to gain the certification.
“Based on our sustainability strategy, our association is systematically promoting concrete initiatives in key areas such as climate change countermeasures, biodiversity conservation, resource recycling, ensuring equity and inclusion, and promoting education and behavioural change,” said Masato Kawamura, the association’s chair.
Efforts are also intensifying to raise awareness of the Expo and engage with exhibitors.
Green x Expo Association introduced the event at the Global Nature Positive Summit 2026, held in Kumamoto Prefecture over July 14 to 15, to the 2,700 attendees from 27 countries.
Back in Yokohama, the association also held a briefing for the Expo’s 200 expected exhibitors, who hail from 74 countries and six international organisations, to help them maximise their attendance at the mega event.
