Safety and cost efficiency drive Chinese outbound MICE market: Dragon Trail

New Research Reveals Shifting Priorities for Chinese Outbound MICE Market

Risk mitigation, cost efficiency, and bespoke wellness experiences will dictate the trajectory of the Chinese outbound business events market over the next three years, according to new trade research.

Dragon Trail Research’s summer 2026 survey of over 300 travel trade professionals working in outbound travel from China, launched at the end of July 2026 revealed that corporate clients are exhibiting highly distinct behavioural trends when planning international business events.

“This season’s research marks our first deep dive into the MICE market,” said Janice Meng, market research analyst at Dragon Trail International.

“The outcomes reveal the immense value that corporate planners place on destination safety and stability. For destinations seeking to capture this lucrative market, understanding these shifting corporate priorities by segment will be vital to driving conversions,” she elaborated.

For corporate planners managing outbound groups, safety remains paramount. Nearly half (47 per cent) of travel agents who actively organised outbound corporate groups over the last two years identify destination safety and stability as the most critical factor for their clients.

Budgetary discipline also remains a top-tier operational priority, with overall cost and value for money ranking as the second most vital consideration at 43 per cent. This is followed by visa convenience (39 per cent), general destination appeal (34 per cent), and venue capacity and facilities quality (33 per cent).

Looking toward future demand, the traditional corporate itinerary is giving way to holistic and experiential programming, with 86 per cent of agents anticipating a substantial rise in demand for customised and immersive experiences at overseas business events.

“Corporate wellbeing is moving from a peripheral perk to a core requirement, with 85 per cent of respondents predicting an uptick in wellness-oriented MICE activities, while 81 per cent of the trade expects the integration of business and leisure travel to step up over the next three years,” said Sienna Parulis-Cook, Dragon Trail International’s director of marketing and communications.

In terms of historical performance, corporate teambuilding activities led the market, with 62 per cent of agents having organised these events in the past two years. Incentive travel (48 per cent), tradeshow delegations (46 per cent), and business exchange programmes (45 per cent) followed closely, while standalone corporate meetings represented a smaller slice at 17 per cent..

To bridge the gap between initial corporate interest and final booking conversions, destinations must alleviate structural friction.

“Of those surveyed, 61% of agents state that practical, operational support – specifically visa facilitation and direct matchmaking connections with local suppliers and partners – is the most valuable assistance NTOs can provide,” Meng concluded.
