Event brief
Organised by the World Hindu Foundation, the third edition of the World Hindu Congress 2023 was held in Bangkok’s IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center from November 24-26, 2023.

The three-day congress was themed Jayasya Aayatnam Dharmah, which translates into English as “Dharma, the Abode of Victory.

This quadrennial congress welcomed more than 3,000 delegates from 70 countries, and sought to bolster connections through various sessions and thematic conferences among Hindus from all around the globe.

In 2014, the inaugural World Hindu Congress took place in New Delhi, before moving to Chicago in 2018. After Bangkok, the congress will take place again in Mumbai in 2026.

Event highlights
The World Hindu Congress 2023 served as a platform for delegates to openly discuss issues related to educational crisis, political instability, and commerce affecting the Hindu diaspora. Challenges faced by the Hindus across the world were also addressed.

Delegates came from all walks of life, ranging from Hindu politicians and economists, to Hindu activists and thought leaders, all of whom converged to network face-to-face and share their knowledge in the hopes of leading the Hindu community forward.

Prominent attendees from the Hindu community who attended include Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister Shri Yogi Adityanath as guest of honour, and Rahul Kumar, the first Indian-origin man to win a city parliamentary election in Germany.

For delegates, the presence of the hugging saint Amma, also known as Mata Amritanandamayi, was a highlight. Considered a living god, followers believe that the Hindu guru can take one’s pains and troubles away with a hug. Throughout the three-day conference, more than 500 people lined up to obtain a hug and a gift from her.

Challenges
The venue’s F&B team had to accommodate the delegate’s dietary requirements, where most were vegetarians, while a few requested Halal meals.

Ensuring food safety was paramount, and as delegates wanted to be aware of what was in the dishes, all ingredients were listed on a tent card. Lunch and dinner were served buffet-style.

To be more sustainable, no chair covers or tablecloths were used, while plastic straws were only provided upon request. The venue’s air conditioning was set at 25°C.

The operations staff also rolled up their sleeves to provide 24-hour security coverage, especially for VIP guests. The venue’s team also worked alongside the local police precinct and private security forces to ensure the congress ran smoothly.

Lopez steps into a newly-created role as head of AI for corporate

Flight Centre Travel Group (FCTG) has established an AI Centre of Excellence, a new global division that will focus on promoting, adopting, and integrating artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into the company’s corporate divisions.

The ‘AI Centre of Excellence’ will strategically harness the power of AI to revolutionise FCTG’s flagship business travel divisions Corporate Traveller and FCM, by enriching customer experiences, boosting employee productivity and more.

Lopez steps into a newly-created role as head of FCTG’s newest division

As part of the launch, Adrian Lopez will step into a newly-created role as head of AI for corporate. He most recently served as global chief technology officer for FCM Digital.

Lopez and his team will set the overall AI strategy for FCTG’s corporate brands and ensure the company is maximising the potential around generative AI, while doing so effectively, responsibly, and in alignment with its business objectives.

The specialised team will implement best practices and provide research, support, and training around AI, with a focus on improving efficiency and driving value to new and existing clients. They will look to find ways to integrate the technology into the operations of the company’s business travel divisions Corporate Traveller and FCM.

“In today’s ever-changing digital world, we recognise the tremendous potential with AI and ways it can transform our work,” said John Morhous, global chief experience officer of FCTG’s Corporate Brands.

Furthermore, FCTG will leverage AI to enhance productivity and improve workflow optimisation, allowing its teams to focus on priority initiatives and more creative-driven projects.

“The disruptive benefits of AI will enable us to work more efficiently, identify new ways to service our clients, and reach the next generation of business travellers. The launch of the ‘AI Centre of Excellence’ is another significant step and milestone to add to the company’s already decorated history of innovation,” said Lopez.

A travel technology pioneer, Lopez has over a decade of industry experience. In 2014, he co-founded the corporate travel tool SAM, a mobile AI-powered app that operates as a 24/7 virtual travel assistant, helping business travellers manage their trips.

FCTG made an initial investment in Sam in 2017, which was followed by a full acquisition in 2019. After the ownership transition, Lopez officially joined the FCTG team, where he helped oversee the integration of Sam’s capabilities across various corporate travel products, while also leading the development of the new FCM Platform.

UFI releases World Map of Exhibition Venues report

Available exhibition space is a key driver in the development of the exhibition industry globally

To provide the industry with up-to-date figures on venue capacities, UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, has published its full report on the World Map of Exhibition Venues.

This edition was, for the first time, prepared by jwc GmbH, in close cooperation with UFI.

Available exhibition space is a key driver in the development of the exhibition industry globally

The report lists the largest venues for all 21 markets whose total capacity exceeds 300,000m2 of gross indoor exhibition space. In total, the report provides data on 1,425 exhibition venues, with a total of 42.1 million square metres.

All exhibition venues with a minimum of 5,000m2 of gross indoor exhibition space, are covered in this global census.

Regionally, Europe still hosts the biggest share of the world’s total venue capacity with 37.2 per cent. With 36.6 per cent, Asia-Pacific has almost caught up, with new space capacities being added across the region as the event industry grows with these markets. With 17.9 per cent, North America stands in third place.

On a country/market level, China is now home to 29.3 per cent of the world’s venue capacity. The US currently holds 14.9 per cent of global venue space capacity, while third-placed Germany is home to 7.5 per cent. Along with Italy and France, these five markets account for 62 per cent of the total world indoor exhibition space.

In terms of size, the number of “mega venues” continues to grow. These are venues with more than 100,000m2 of exhibition space. The World Map now tracks 81 such venues around the world, accounting for six per cent of the total market. Forty of these mega venues are available across Europe, and 35 exist in Asia-Pacific.

More than one-third (35 per cent) of all venues belong to the medium-size segment, offering between 20,000 and 100,000m2, while 59 per cent of venues globally have an indoor capacity of between 5,000 and 20,000m2.

The average size of venues in the Asia-Pacific region exceeds that of any other region, a result of the many infrastructure projects in the region, especially in China.

The 2023 UFI World Map of Exhibition Venues covers the following markets: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Turkey, UAE, United Kingdom, and the US.

Kai Hattendorf, UFI’s CEO and managing director, said: “This updated World Map showcases our industry’s most holistic and complete quantitative dataset. It is remarkable to see that global investments into upgrades and expansions of exhibition venue space have continued throughout the pandemic, a true testament to the power and resilience of our industry’s core business model. Investments into venue space are a win for everyone: for the industries served by exhibitions, and the destinations in which they take place. Our partnership with jwc for this project will facilitate regular editions of this important report.”

Wellington has won the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre Conference (APNIC 58) for the first time.

The conference is expected to attract more than 500 delegates to Tākina Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre, from August 30 to September 6, 2024.

APNIC is the Regional Internet Registry administering IP addresses for the Asia Pacific. Each year, the APNIC community comes together for policy development, decision-making, education, information sharing, and networking – both professional and social.

In addition to the main conference, this event also offers a range of side events and workshops, including the Asia Pacific Internet Exchange Association (APIX) meeting which will take place immediately preceding the conference.

“As APNIC serves a combined 25,000 members and sub-accounts across the 56 economies of the Asia Pacific, our meetings are rotated around the region in accessible and attractive locations with high-quality venues. The 2024 APNIC conference will return to the Oceania subregion for the first time since 2020 and Wellington will be a spectacular destination,” says Paul Wilson, APNIC director general.

Business Events Wellington’s manager Irette Ferreira shared that this win is the latest in an influx of conference business from the Asia Pacific market.

In November this year, the city played host to 11 conferences from this region across a broad range of subjects and research areas including the 3rd Asia-Pacific Society for Physical Activity Conference, and the State of Australasian Cities Conference which is taking place in New Zealand for the first time in the event’s 20-year history.

A few weeks ago, Wellington also welcomed the 36th International Symposium on Superconductivity, the first time the conference has been held outside of Japan. Superconductivity is a key research strength for Victoria University’s Robinson Research Institute, which is convening this conference locally.

“These wins solidify Wellington’s reputation as both a research leader and as an attractive conference destination for convening the Pacific region and beyond,” she stated.

Asia Venue Alliance forms, aims to grow business events in secondary destinations

The official signing of AVA took place at BE @ Penang 2023

Convention centres in secondary destinations in Asia have united to form the first Asia Venue Alliance (AVA), where the alliance aims to advance event hosting standards and establish a strong regional brand that can shine on the global business events stage.

The alliance will also foster collaboration through the exchange of events, cross-promotion, and sharing valuable industry insights.

The official signing of AVA took place at BE @ Penang 2023

AVA’s five founding members – Ariyana Convention Centre Danang, Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center, International Convention Centre Tainan, Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, and Setia SPICE Convention Centre – officially signed a Memorandum of Cooperation at Setia SPICE Convention Centre in Penang on December 7 in conjunction with the eighth edition of BE @ Penang 2023.

AVA’s chairman, Francis Teo, told TTGmice: “We aspire to capitalise on the collective strengths of our members and the burgeoning international business events market to generate robust business leads for rotating conferences and association meetings. Typically, at tradeshows, one considers oneself fortunate to secure 10 to 12 leads per event. Through this alliance, our aim is to significantly surpass this benchmark.”

On whether the destinations are competing against one another, Gentzsch Andre, general manager of Ariyana Tourism Complex, pointed out: “We don’t see ourselves as competing for business, but instead, we are cooperating. For us, this alliance is important in building our visibility as Vietnam does not have a convention bureau and has limited marketing for business events.”

Eric van Piggelen, CEO of Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, and Riyanthi Handayani, president director of Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center, are also both thrilled to be part of the alliance.

“We are not just creating a network but we are building a community of premier event spaces committed to delivering unparalleled experiences. Our vision is to set the stage for extraordinary events that leave a lasting impact,” stated Riyanthi.

“Together, we will establish new standards for event excellence and position Asia as the go-to destination for world-class conventions and gatherings,” added Piggelen.
