As the largest economic and cultural hub in northeastern Japan, with a population of more than one million, Sendai is aiming to attract more large international meetings and incentives through new services.
Launched in April, the support ranges from introductions to venues and tourism information to the dispatch of English language volunteers and provision of welcome signage.

Accommodation subsidies are available for overseas pax consisting of at least three nationalities, with at least 10 participants. The groups must stay at hotels or ryokan inns in the city for at least two nights and host their event at one of the city’s event venues, a facility operated by a supporting association member, or another designated space. Groups of 200 pax or more are eligible for the largest subsidy of ¥1 million (US$6,184).
In addition, groups can benefit from ¥100,000 in financial support for hospitality expenses such as attractions or entertainment, sake tastings, AV equipment rental, printing of programmes and personnel needed for excursions.
Kazuhiro Kobayashi, a senior director at Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association, told TTGmice the organisation aims to “increase Sendai’s competitiveness as a destination for meetings and incentive travel”, by including enhancing support programmes, improving participant satisfaction, and developing new content.
Interest in the city’s experiences has been growing among buyers. Popular options include receptions at National Treasure Zuiganji Temple, factory tours of Toyota Motor East Japan and visits to the International Research Institute of Disaster Science at Tohoku University.
“Sendai’s proximity to Tokyo, diverse programme options, rich history, natural environment, and attractive subsidy schemes make it a compelling destination for meetings and incentive travel,” Kobayashi said.
Still, even as Sendai attracts more business events, suitable facilities are not always available, he admitted. A local government reconstruction plan, scheduled for completion by 2036, aims to tackle the challenge by supporting the development of event venues and luxury hotels in the heart of the city.
