Best Western Q Khon Kaen has opened in Thailand’s upper north-east region as the city’s first international upper-midscale chain hotel.
The 125-room property, which soft-launched on September 1, 2026, is targeting domestic business events demand. It aims to capture overflow demand from the nearby Khon Kaen International Convention and Exhibition Centre (KICE), the north-eastern region’s largest venue, while developing its own on-site meeting facilities, slated to open in three years’ time.
“For the first year, our goal is to gradually ramp up to a stable occupancy of around 60 per cent, with corporate and MICE travellers making up about 40 per cent and leisure accounting for the rest,” Phutsadee Wonganu, general manager of Best Western Q Khon Kaen, told TTGmice.
Khon Kaen was named Thailand’s fifth MICE city by the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) in 2013. The city is promoted by TCEB as a gateway to Isan, or the north-east, which encompasses 19 provinces and about a third of Thailand’s population, as well as Indochina and South China through its proximity to Laos and the wider Greater Mekong Subregion.
“There is also a Best Western in Buriram that opened before us, but we define that Best Western as being in the lower Isan zone because it’s in Buriram, whereas we are in Khon Kaen, which is in the upper Isan zone,” explained Phutsadee.
Best Western Q Khon Kaen sits close to KICE and is already filling rooms from events held there. It was fully booked for a public health conference from September 2 to 3, 2026, and bookings for a Charoen Pokphand Group meeting on September 18, 2026 are close to capacity.
“We don’t have meeting rooms, but we were full because we secured bookings from those attending the conference,” Phutsadee said. She described Khon Kaen’s business events as primarily domestic for now, pointing to academic conferences, civil service examinations, corporate meetings, and provincial events as recurring domestic drivers.
The hotel has met KICE’s management to discuss bundled packages, an arrangement that has delivered around 50 room bookings so far.
The hotel’s next phase is anchored by dedicated event facilities. Best Western Q Khon Kaen will add about 17 rooms by early 2027 to reach 142 keys during its grand opening phase, before a second phase on an adjacent plot, expected within three years, lifts total inventory beyond 200 keys and gives the hotel meeting space of its own.
“We have plans for one large conference room to accommodate meetings and concerts, seating over 100 pax, along with three breakout rooms,” Phutsadee said.
