Onyx Hospitality Group has opened Nila – a dining destination that pays homage to the flavours of India’s coastal and river port regions – on the fourth floor of Amari Bangkok.

The menu is curated by Bharath S. Bhat, winner of Thailand’s Iron Chef one-on-one battle chef competition. It showcases an array of dishes featuring fresh seafood recipes influenced by Portuguese cuisine from Goa and the Malabar coast, as well as European culinary traditions along India’s eastern coast.

Nila derives its name from the Malayalam word for the colour blue, symbolising the waters of India’s coast. The restaurant’s interior design draws inspiration from the vibrant hues of Portuguese architecture found in Goa, complemented by traditional Indian textures and visuals.

A complete restaurant book out will cost 125,000 baht nett with a maximum capacity of 100 guests for a sit-down dinner. The price includes food and soft drinks, with alcoholic drinks costing extra. For smaller-sized business events, Nila also offers private dining rooms with capacity not exceeding 12 guests.

The menu is customisable, where requests related to Indian coastal cuisine are possible. However, more well-known North Indian dishes such as butter chicken, naan, or chicken tikka are not on offer.

Nila marks the latest addition to Onyx Hospitality Group’s portfolio of hospitality brands, which alongside hotels and resorts, also includes the Italian restaurant Prego. The company has also unveiled plans for branch expansion of Nila into prominent hotels and resorts across South-east Asia.

A strong lineup of suppliers from destinations, venues, hotels and technology have been confirmed at IMEX Frankfurt 2024

With a global range of exhibitors, learning sessions that dig into today’s most pertinent issues and opportunities to build new connections, IMEX Frankfurt 2024 is set to be a show with impact. From recent meetings with buyers and suppliers across Europe and beyond, the IMEX team knows that planners have constraints on their resources and budgets, and have become much more intentional about how they spend their time, money, and energy.

IMEX Frankfurt CEO Carina Bauer

“In planning IMEX Frankfurt, we’ve been more intentional too. We’ve taken a close look at our attendees, what they want, and why they want it,” said IMEX CEO Carina Bauer. “Doing business will sit front and centre of the show, along with opportunities for event professionals to broaden their global connections. A visit to IMEX Frankfurt will be an efficient and enjoyable experience from start to finish, and one that enables planners to supercharge their desired results.”

A strong roster of suppliers representing destinations, venues, hotels and technology is already confirmed for the show, taking place from May 14 to 16. The Asian market is growing significantly with Macau, Malaysia, Korea and Singapore all expanding their presence at the show. They join a broad range of European destinations from Croatia, Finland and Ireland to Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

Curated content for the event community

IMEX’s learning programme begins the day before the show, on Monday, May 13, with specialist education for event professionals from associations – Association Focus – and in-house – Exclusively Corporate.

With burnout on the increase (according to the latest Freeman Trends Report 2024), disabled adventurer Darren Edwards will share his life lessons at both Association Focus and Exclusively Corporate.

He said: “In an ever-changing world, a business’s ability to adapt and its staff’s mental toughness have become integral to success. My journey tells the story of overcoming a life-changing injury and adapting to a new set of circumstances. After a fateful day when my life hung in the balance on the edge of a rockface, I learned several powerful lessons that have shaped my ability to adapt and remain resilient during difficult times. These lessons are incredibly relevant to businesses and their leaders.” Darren will also join the new Tough Talk sessions, discussing important life challenges in a closed environment.

First-timers to IMEX can make the most of a welcome package of activities before and during the show. A webinar on April 25 focuses on the team’s top tips for making the most of the show, while an introductory meet-up on the show’s opening day will help newbies meet each other and get their bearings.

The magnificent kinetic chandelier in the Rotunda opens up to the INSPIRE Arena

Brought to you by INSPIRE Entertainment Resort

Officially opened in March 2024, the five-star INSPIRE Entertainment Resort is a new luxurious addition to Yeongjong island.

Situated in the International Business Center III, to the west of Incheon International Airport, the 1,275-key hotel offers unique and multifaceted venues for events of all needs and sizes.

“As the first venture into Asia for Mohegan, the American integrated entertainment resort operator, “INSPIRE will set a new standard for resorts supported by innovation and creativity, delivering inspiring spaces and cultural experiences, and we will together contribute to the development of Incheon Yeongjongdo as a world-class tourist destination,” said Chen Si, President of INSPIRE.

Mohegan, a global premier integrated entertainment resort operator, owns INSPIRE.

Its MICE facilities are where business and pleasure can be combined. INSPIRE boasts the largest hotel ballroom in South Korea, which at 12,000m2, can hold 4,000 people. This is complemented by a large business centre, wedding venues including a bridal waiting room and an exclusive entrance for MICE facilities.

Other facilities include:

INSPIRE Arena

The centrepiece of its venues is the INSPIRE Arena, Korea’s first multi-purpose arena with 15,000 seats. Equipped with state-of-the-art MICE facilities including a world-class sound system and adaptable seating arrangements, the Arena is designed for the optimal performance experience.

Seats are staggered to ensure attendees enjoy an unobstructed view with the furthest seat just 75m from the stage. It is ideal for hosting a variety of events including live music performances and sporting events. About 60 per cent of events in the Arena will be concerts, 30 per cent for sports matches and 10 per cent for corporate events, said Michael Jensen, chief marketing officer.

During the hotel’s opening ceremony, the Arena was the stage for American band Maroon 5 and has since hosted Korean music acts and World Table Tennis (WTT) Champions Incheon.

Rotunda

One cannot overlook the Rotunda, the gateway to the INSPIRE Arena. It houses the ticket booth for the arena and occasionally can host an array of pop-up events, including artist merchandise booths and special exhibitions.

Drawing the eyes to the heart of the hall is the kinetic chandelier, a massive masterpiece comprising 156 LED panels, each equipped with its own actuator that allows it to move.

During the resort’s grand opening ceremony, the Rotunda was transformed to accommodate about 500 guests while a large stage with huge LED screens was installed. The kinetic chandelier was pulled up to create more space and give the illusion of a higher ceiling, explained Michael Jensen, chief marketing officer.

Aurora

Another eye-catching feature is Aurora, the 150m long, 25m high immersive digital walkway with floor-to-ceiling ultra-high-definition LED screens projecting surrealistic digital art. A digital show will be shown every 30 minutes. It leads to the Rotunda and can be part of an immersive experience for event attendees.

“Rotunda will be the perfect place to hold a celebration or gathering event with a more dynamic and interactive vibe as it is a large open circular hall. Depending on the type of event, there is even an option to include a kinetic chandelier show. Planners can also include the Aurora, which is directly connected to the Rotunda, to further enhance guest experience,” said Jensen.

Splash Bay

Let guests unwind at Splash Bay, the indoor water park that is perfect for team building and social gatherings outside the traditional meeting room setting.

Enclosed by a glass sky dome, it lets natural light shine through. The moveable floor of the pool can be adjusted for different purposes. For instance, it can be raised to ground level to create a flat surface and was previously done so for a fashion runway show.

The multi-purpose Splash Bay can be used for lifestyle events such as day and night pool parties, brand events, movie screenings, fitness classes and more. For performances, it can accommodate 900 people, whereas for dining events, it can hold 560 seats.

Festival of light illuminates Australia’s Northern Territory

Parrtjima – A Festival in Light will light up for 10 nights in Northern Territory’s Alice Springs Desert Park, featuring new illuminations, artworks, talks, music, and markets from April 12 to 21.

Organised by Northern Territory Major Events Company (NTMEC) and in partnership with Creative Directors Grumpy Sailor and events destination company We Are Gather, this free event will delight visitors under star-studded desert skies, celebrating the importance of interconnectedness across First Nations culture in Alice Springs (Mparntwe).

Parrtjima – A Festival in Light opens on April 12; Bush Flowers by Pammy Kemarre Foster

Parrtjima’s large-scale light installations includes the MacDonnell Ranges Light Show, which sees almost two kilometres of the 300-million-year-old MacDonnell Ranges come to life through a new, extended light and sound show, and the much-loved Grounded, which projects animated Indigenous art onto the red sands of Alice Springs Desert Park.

Other new light installations include The Arrernte, a series of illuminated cars which celebrate a collage of work across Eastern, Western and Central language groups; Honouring, an immersive passageway which will pay homage to the great Arrernte leader, the late MK Turner OAM; and Tjoritja Cockatoos, where the evocative artwork of artist and director of Iltja Ntjarra Art Centre, Vanessa Inkamala, is brought to life across three screens and represents the cyclical and seasonal work of country.

For the first time, expert puppeteers will bring to life the theatrical experience Arelhe Urrperle, standing at six-metres tall and weighing 600kg. Strolling through the festival sharing language and stories, Arelhe Urrperle represents the matriarchs and knowledge holders in Aboriginal cultures, recognising the influence and importance of the First Nations women, their strength and spirit, and their role as providers to the families connected to the Arrernte skin groups.

In another first, a three-night marketplace will offer art, bush medicine, jewellery and beauty products from local Aboriginal businesses and art centres from April 12 to 14.

Other highlights include appearances by singer-songwriter Shellie Morris, R&B artist Miiesha, Indigenous performers will be performing during the festival.

NTMEC CEO Suzana Bishop said: “Parrtjima not only brings together the world’s oldest living cultures with leading-edge technology, it brings together people from across the country to connect and engage with our First Nations people and cultures.

“It is also an event that makes a meaningful and positive impact on local communities, as well as the local economy.”

Secondary Chinese cities see spike in international incentive travel demand

0
Chengdu, China, is rising in popularity as an incentive destination

Incentive trips to China are making a comeback this year, buoyed by the relaxation of visa policies and the relative affordability of second-tier destinations.

Melvyn Nonis, director, MICE Matters, told TTGmice: “China was off the radar for a while, but it is back. Clients that have done South Korea and Japan, or those who find these countries relatively expensive, are opting for Tier Two Chinese cities such as Kunming, Chengdu, Xi’An, and Chongqing.”

Chengdu, China, is rising in popularity as an incentive destination

In January this year, MICE Matters led a group of 60 pax to Kunming. Over the next few months, the event firm will bring three batches of clients to Chengdu – 800 pax in July, and 350 pax and 250 pax in October. Programmes would run for four days and three nights, and comprise a team bonding session, as well as a themed gala dinner.

Nonis added: “Our R&D team started to focus on China earlier this year to design incentive tour programmes with our local partner. We believe China has much to offer, and it’s a value-for-money MICE destination. We want to be at the forefront of this movement, as I believe China will be in demand for the next three years or so.”

Theresa Lee, director of M+i Journeys, has also noticed a slight increase in enquiries for Tier Two Chinese cities, such as Chongqing, Sanya, Xi’an and Chengdu, after March.

However, she said these destinations are not definitely cheaper than other options, as “domestic demand is still high”. Furthermore, connectivity challenges exist.

Demand is also up for Greater China, with FCM Meetings & Events reporting a 30 per cent increase in requests among its incentive travel clients.

Jingwen Wong, FCM Meetings & Events leader, South-east Asia and Greater China, said: “In China, business meetings are still taking place primarily in Shanghai and Beijing, but incentive trips are moving to Tier Two cities due to them being more affordable.”

Hong Kong and Macau are also attracting interest due to improving seat capacity and heightened tourism marketing initiatives, according to Wong.

To make the most of cost savings, Wong advises companies to book their trips six to nine months ahead, which could earn them more than 20 per cent savings in airfares. She added that full-service airfares could be comparable to low-cost fares when booked in advance.
